What are facial expression wrinkles?
How do they appear?
The muscles responsible for facial expression are firmly bond to the skin of the face. If a contraction of the expression muscles occurs, a visible wrinkle appears. Depending on which muscle is contracted, your face can produce expressions of happiness, surprise, anger or discomfort. Botulinum Toxin is a naturally existing bacteria protein. If injected into a muscle, it specifically blocks the transmission of the nerve impulse. As a result, the muscle cannot be contracted as usual. Other nerve functions such as feeling over the skin are not influenced.
How does exactly wrinkle treatment work with Botulinum Toxin?
Does it hurt?
The solution with Botulinum toxin is directly injected into the muscle (or its surroundings) causing the formation of the wrinkle. By using very fine hypodermic needles, the pain is not significant; in some cases a short burning feeling is referred.
How long does the effect of Botulinum Toxin last?
How often do I have to be treated?
The complete effects appear after 3 – 5 days. The effects last for 3 - 6 months. By repeating the procedure, more long lasting effects are achieved, even up to one year.
Botulinum Toxin interests me, but is it not somehow dangerous?
As in other injections applied to the skin, in very few cases skin irritations, infection or slight swellings can occur. On few occasions, on the puncture spot a small bruise may occur. But all the mentioned side-effects recede after a few days.
When treating the skin on the lateral eyebrow area, a temporary fall of the eyebrows or the eyelid might occur. But, according to modern science and experience, these side-effects are only temporary. There are no long lasting side-effects in the treatment of facial expression wrinkles.
How do I know that Botulinum Toxin is the right thing for me?
Botulinum Toxin is always adequate for wrinkles due to repeated contraction of the facial expression muscles. For wrinkles appearing due to the aging process of the skin, there are additional proceedings available such as peelings, filling up with structural material or laser treatments.
