What are facial expression wrinkles? How do they appear?
The muscles responsible for facial expression are firmly bound to the skin of the face. If a contraction of the expression muscles occurs, a visible wrinkle appears. Depending on which muscle is contracted, your face can produce expressions of happiness, surprise, anger or discomfort. Especially the wrinkles between the eyebrows frequently convey the impression of displeasure. This is why they are referred to as “worry lines”, leading to the so-called “angry look”. Quite often, however, these wrinkles are only the result of concentration or tension, for example when working on the computer or driving.
The repeated contraction of the facial muscles will eventually lead to a permanent deepening of existing wrinkles. As a result, the wrinkles remain even if the face is not contracted.
What are the treatment options for facial expression wrinkles?
The purpose of an effective anti-wrinkle treatment is the prevention of muscle contraction and the lifting of the already existing wrinkles. And this is what Botulinum Toxin does.
What is Botulinum Toxin?
How does it work?
Botulinum Toxin is a naturally existing bacteria protein. If injected into a muscle, it specifically blocks the transmission of the nerve impulse. As a result, the muscle cannot be contracted as usual. Other nerve functions, such as feeling over the skin are not impaired.
How does wrinkle treatment with Botulinum Toxin work?
Does it hurt?
The solution with Botulinum toxin is directly injected into the muscle (or its surroundings) causing the formation of the wrinkle. By using very fine hypodermic needles, the pain is not significant. In some cases a short burning feeling has been reported.
How long does the effect of Botulinum Toxin (Botox) last?
The results appear after 3 to 5 days and last for 3 to 6 months. By repeating the procedure, longer lasting results are achieved, even up to one year.
Botulinum Toxin interests me, but is it not somehow dangerous?
As with other injections into the skin, in very few cases, infection or slight swelling can occur. A small bruise may appear at the injection spots in rare cases. But all the above-mentioned side effects recede after a few days.
When treating the skin on the lateral eyebrow area, a temporary lowering of the eyebrows or the eyelid might occur. But these are only temporary side effects according to modern science. There are no long-lasting side effects in the treatment of facial expression wrinkles.
How do I know that Botulinum Toxin (Botox) is the right thing for me?
Botulinum Toxin is always suitable for wrinkles caused by repeated contraction of the facial expression muscles. For wrinkles caused by the aging process of the skin, there are additional treatment options available, such as peelings, filler with structural material or laser treatments.
