What is PhotoDerm®VL?

PhotoDerm®VL is a laser-like device whose flash of light can remove fine facial veins (couperosis) or small varicose veins on the legs, spider-nevi, birthmarks (such as nevus flammeus and hemangiomas), age spots, scars and excessive hair growth.

How does PhotoDerm®VL work?

PhotoDerm®VL generates a high-intensity pulsed light that is administered by the physician with the push of a button. The light penetrates the skin, reaches the targeted vein and thermally heats and coagulates it.

What are birthmarks?

Birthmarks are skin changes, such as nevus flammeus and hemangiomas, caused by the accumulation of numerous blood vessels in the skin. They occur at birth and in most cases they grow larger with age.

Can all types of dilated blood vessels, age spots, birthmarks and excess hair growth be treated?

Your physician will take your skin changes into consideration and decide if this is the right treatment for you.

Does this treatment hurt?

Since the treatment merely involves a pulsed light, most patients only feel a slight sting, like the snapping of a rubber band when the pulsed light penetrates the skin. Painkillers or local anesthesia are generally not needed.

Are there any side effects?

As with any other medical therapy, side effects are possible. There might an occasional slight redness of the skin or swelling at the treatment site, but that will disappear within a few days. In rare instances, blistering or sunburn-like overreactions occurred that also healed, and only patients with very dark skin were affected. The same goes for pigment changes.

How many treatments are necessary?

Typically, 2 to 7 treatment sessions are necessary. Each session lasts 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

Will my insurance company pay for this treatment?

You have for pay for PhotoDerm® VL, because it is generally considered to be a cosmetic procedure and not covered by insurance.

Am I limited in my activities after the treatment session?

Depending on the treated area, you can resume your regular activities immediately or the day after treatment. Intense exposure to the sun should be avoided prior to, during and for several weeks following treatment. Please consult your physician.

Is PhotoDerm® VL better than other methods?

PhotoDerm®VL allows your physician to adapt treatment to the specific characteristics of your skin. This variable, interactive form of treatment surpasses every other non-invasive method currently available.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins can be treated with the most advanced VascuLight laser technology simply by utilizing pulsed light flashes, eliminating the need for any incision or penetration of the skin.
